The government has appointed Mr Md Nurul Islam as Chief Engineer of LGED and he joint on 27 August 2008. He has replaced the former Chief Engineer Mr Md Shahidul Hassan, who went on leave preparatory to retirement with effect from 28 August 2008. Mr Islam was born on 30 December 1951 at the village of Kachipara under Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali District. Mr Islam is the second son of Late Abdul Hoque Akand and Late Mariam Hoque. Mr Islam obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Rajshahi Engineering College in 1975. He did his Masters of Science in Irrigation Engineering in 1988 from the University of Southampton, UK.

 

Mr Islam started his career as Assistant Engineer on 18 April 1975 in Public Works Department. He joined in the position of Executive Engineer on 26 October 1978 in the erstwhile Rural Work Programme, which was transformed to LGED. Mr Islam became Project Director on 1 October 1991 and implemented Rural Development Projects, Rubber Dam Construction Projects and Small-Scale Water Development Projects. He promoted to the positions of Superintending Engineer on 1 January 2003 and Additional Chief Engineer on 23 July 2007. Mr Islam played a strategic for the creation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Unit in LGED and a vital role for the participatory approaches to sustainable small-scale water resources management.

 

Mr Islam has enhanced his professional development through participation, both as trainee and trainer/resource person in trainings, workshops, seminars and conferences in Bangladesh and abroad. He is professional engineer, life fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, USA. He presented 22 papers in conferences, seminars and workshops, locally and internationally. He awarded the LGEB Gold Medal in 1990 for the recognition of his outstanding performance in LGED.

 

Mr Islam took part in contract and loan negotiations in Manila ADB Headquarters, and 3rd World Water Forum in Japan as government delegate. He actively participated in Asia Regional Conferences of International Commission for Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) held in Korea, Australia and Malaysia. In 1998, Mr Islam was engaged in the Supervision Mission to review IFAD and ADB assisted Chitral Area Development Project in Pakistan as a Rural Engineer and the Appraisal Mission of the IFAD assisted Smallholder Agricultural Implemented Project in Bangladesh an Irrigation Engineer.
